Before Hurricane Milton makes landfall, I spent several hours quickly building up an
active hurricane tracker for practical emergency use with
following cartographic/meteorological considerations:
1. power-saving dark theme;
2. labeled street basemap providing legible evacuation guidance;
3. prioritizing future threats over the observed;
4. specific predicted tracks will not be overemphasized, but key info is
provided;
5. highlighted coastal watches and warnings;
6. enlightening areas with higher possibility of storm force;
7. colorblind friendly, leaving nobody alone;
8. interactivity (pop-up shows up after clicking map features);
9. all configurations prioritize the potential need in emergency;
10. more features might be added in the future.

Hurricane Milton made landfall as Category 3 Major Hurricane on Florida's central west coast at around 8:30 pm EDT on Oct 9, 2024, with sustained winds of 120 mph at landfall. Below are 3 maps at about that time, showing the probability of tropical storm force (34kts), strong tropical storm force (50kts), and hurricane force (64kts+):
A slider is added to better display the observed tracks with satellite imagery, and the predicted routes and probability of storm force. Click to view this active hurricane tracker.
