I spent a truly special summer interning at Apple Maps. It was my first in-person internship, my first
time working in the industry, my first visit to the Bay Area, and also the first time I relied entirely
on a bicycle to explore a new place (Cupertino and vicinity). I initially just wanted to visualize the
routes I biked during the summer, but I couldn’t help devoting more time to refining the design details
(still far from perfect), because it was such a meaningful and rewarding experience.
In recent years, I’ve created several maps about personal memories and spatial footprints. What began as
a small, self-entertaining hobby surprisingly won some awards, which encouraged me to develop
“personalized spatial narrative” as a cartographic theme. Through maps of my story—often built with
simple techniques—I hope to show the creative potential of this approach and inspire others to make maps
based on their own experiences, expanding the boundaries of cartography for everyone, regardless of
whether they’ve made a map before.
Mapping is not only about places, but also how we connect our lives to them.
